BASILICA OF BOM JESUS-GOA

 

The Basilica of bom jesus church is located in goa(india). This church is accidentally burnt down in 1663 and was rebuilt in 1783. The meaning of 'bom jesus' is good jesus or infant jesus.

The church was India's first Minor Basilica, and is considered one of the best examples of baroque architecture in India. 

The church is around 300 years old and holds the remains of St. Francis Xavier. 


It is one of the finest examples of Portuguese influence as the edifice is done in signature Baroque style.

The flooring has been done in marble, inlaid with precious stones, the altar is elaborate with gilded gold work, the murals and the artistic rendition are also worth the appreciation.

The church has been declared as the world heritage site and also boasts of a museum. 

 A large number of believers gather at the church when the preserved body of Saint Francis Xavier is put on display.

asilica of Bom Jesus also houses an art gallery. This modern art gallery is one of the largest and one of its kinds in Asia. The gallery houses paintings of Italian art. The gallery has 36 oil paintings that have been made between 1973 and 1976. The largest two are 'The Last Judgement' (6ft x 9ft) and 'Genesis' (4ft x 28ft). 

ASI's Mini Circle conducted conservation work in the church of Bom Jesus. They removed and re-laid the broken marble slabs of the floor. The decayed wooden beams and planks of the first floor verandah as well as the doors and the windows were replaced. A compound wall was also constructed by them and a cement concrete wall was provided to the underground drain. 

TIMINGS OF THE CHURCH:

• Weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m and Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Holy hour is celebrated at 5 pm on first Friday of the month.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The Basilica of Bom Jesus church remains open all year round. So one can visit this spot at any time of the year. The timing of church during normal days & during masses is different.

1 Hour is enough to see Basilica of Bom Jesus church Goa.

EATING STUFF:

There are some restaurants nearby the basilica of bom Jesus to grab a bite. But if are coming from Panaji or Vasco then those cities have more options to eat.
